Lead Mobile App Developer
Introduction
Magnes AG is a spin-off from ETH Zurich based in Zurich, Switzerland, with an entity in the USA, developing sensorized shoes for gait analysis and cueing of people with impaired gait. Magnes has medical and well-being versions of its shoe NUSHU. We are looking for a motivated individual with an eye for UI/UX to join us as an iOS developer and take ownership of the NUSHU iOS app — the companion app through which patients, therapists and clinical researchers record activities, configure haptic cueing, update shoe firmware and review their gait results.
The app is the user-facing half of a Class IIa medical device: it talks to the shoes over BLE and WiFi, ships their firmware, uploads recordings to our cloud, and presents the results of our gait analysis. It is written in Swift and SwiftUI, is localized into 14 languages, and is developed under a regulated software lifecycle. You will not be maintaining it alone, but you will be the person who knows it best.
Must have
- Degree in Computer Science, a compatible discipline, or comparable experience.
- Fluent in English, both written and spoken.
- Solid command of Swift and the Apple toolchain.
- Practical experience with SwiftUI.
- Experience with wireless interfaces: CoreBluetooth, GATT services and characteristics, advertisement parsing, connection loss and reconnection, background behavior and WiFi connectivity (NetworkExtension).
- Experience with REST APIs and connected systems: token-based authentication, offline and flaky-network handling, retries, and streaming of live sensor data.
- Comfort with local persistence and platform security: SQLite or Core Data, Keychain, on-device encryption.
- Testing with unit tests (Swift Testing / XCTest), mocking through dependency injection, and UI tests.
- Knowledge of UI/UX, and willingness to design as well as implement.
- Experience shipping through App Store Connect: code signing and provisioning, archiving, TestFlight distribution, phased release, App Review.
- Smooth team player.
Nice to have
- Experience in a regulated industry (MDR/FDA, IEC 62304, ISO 14971, IEC 62366) or in clinical research software; familiarity with GDPR/HIPAA constraints on health data.
- Appetite for functional programming.
- Experience with data visualization on iOS (Swift Charts).
- Experience with accessibility (VoiceOver, Dynamic Type, contrast).
- Experience setting up CI/CD for iOS (GitLab CI, Xcode Cloud, fastlane).
- Any Android development experience (Kotlin, Android Studio) is a plus.
- German is a plus for working with our Swiss clinical partners, but not required.
Tasks
- Develop and maintain NUSHU’s iOS apps (patient, research and well-being variants), including:
- BLE and WiFi communication with the shoes, encompassing firmware delivery, and debugging against real devices.
- Implement UIs for the NUSHU platform which boost UX, and carry out usability tests with patients and healthcare professionals.
- Keep the app releasable: versioning, changelog, store submissions, TestFlight rounds.
- Keep the app’s test suite meaningful and green; extend automated build and test pipelines.
- Contribute to the technical documentation and verification activities required by our medical device certification.
- Work closely with our firmware and cloud-analysis developers, and contribute to the further development of the products as a whole.
What we offer
- End-to-end ownership of a product that measurably improves how people walk.
- Direct contact with clinicians, researchers and patients who use what you build.
- A small, co-located team where firmware, app, cloud and science sit in the same room with hardware, shoes and colleagues all within arm’s reach.
